I graduated from William and Mary on May 11th. Schlumbergerwanted me to start work on May 13th, which would’ve meant traveling to Houstonon the 12th. Yeah…not happening.
I had to move out of my house in Williamsburg, and I reallywanted some time off to just relax for a bit. After hounding my manager for awhile, I finally got the start date pushed back to June 10th.
What to do with a month off?
Well, I went home to Menlo Park, CA, and laid low. I playedsome golf, went on a few trips/hikes (check out Rock with Knox, I made it out to Pinnacles National Park,Yosemite National Park, Castle Rock State Park, and to the summit of Mt.Tamalpais), experienced the wackiness of Bay to Breakers in SanFrancisco for the first time, and even made it out to my brother’s high schoolgraduation.
Eventually it came time to head to Houston in the heat ofthe summer to begin training. After a horrendous day of travel--flightcancelled…had to switch airports in Dallas…bags delayed…got in at 3 a.m.--OFS-1training (which I just found out stands for Oilfield Services) began early thenext morning. It provided the newest batch of Schlumberger field specialistswith endless information via presentations and handouts. Death by powerpoint.
Overall, the course served as a good introduction to thecompany, and the instructor kept it interesting enough. They even outfitted mewith PPE (personal protective equipment) including new boots, coveralls (picturea bright orange jumpsuit…), and prescription safety goggles.
While the rest of the class moved on to Light VehicleTraining in Tulsa, OK, one other fellow mud logger trainee and myself stayed atthe SLB Sugar Land campus for 3 weeks of a full mud logging (FML) course at theon-site Learning Center. There are also research buildings and a full-size rigcalled Genesis on the campus, with amenities such as a gym, walking trails,outdoor basketball court, and more. While on the premises, all employees arerequired to reverse park their vehicles. Driving is the most dangerous activitywithin Schlumberger, and reverse parking has been shown to be a safer practice.Schlumberger is all over Houston: there are other campuses and even a hugeoffice building near the downtown area.
There turned out to be 6 students in the mud logging course,one of whom is from Mexico and another from Indonesia that works in the Gulf ofMexico (GoM). The other 2 students had already been offshore as samplecatchers, which are essentially junior mud loggers. Our instructor had workedon rigs in Southeast Asia and Azerbaijan, among other places. To be honest, thecourse moved too slowly and there was too much down time. It felt like death bypowerpoint round 2.
Obviously, the few days that focused on geological sampleanalysis and descriptions were the most enjoyable for me. But I also walkedaway with an improved, albeit still rudimentary, understanding of the drillingprocess and terminology. Learning how to calculate parameters such as lag time, which is theamount of time it takes for cuttings to pass from the bottom of the well up tothe surface, actually has application in the field. Finally we learned thebasics of the plethora of sensors that Geoservices has placed around the rig,and how to work the programs that process all the drilling and lithology datain real-time.
I would have preferred to get on-the-job training at leastonce before attending the course, as I often was playing catch up withterminology and learning the equipment. However, I passed the class with flyingcolors, certificate and all.
We also had the weekends free, so our group got to exploresome of Houston’s tourist attractions including: the Houston Zoo, the NaturalScience Museum (NSM), the NASA Johnson Space Center, the Galleria Mall, andeven an Astros game at Minute Maid Park against Atlanta (see Images 1-3). It was great seeingthe Braves get the shutout win, but I most enjoyed seeing the gems and mineralsexhibit and the new paleontology hall at the NSM (see Image 4).
The Learning Center took good care of us, subsidizing ourmeals at the cafeteria, putting us up in a decent hotel, and giving us rides toand from the campus. I was also impressed by the geographic diversity of boththe students and staff. For the most part, employees working in the Americascome to the Learning Center in Sugar Land, as opposed to the other twoinstructional facilities in Abu Dhabi and Paris. My fingers are crossed thatI’ll be able to attend training at either location at some point!
But, my time in the swampy southern weather wasn’t done…Ihad a week more to pick up all the certifications I needed to finally gooffshore!
