Tensions Between US and Iran Increase
On January 3, tensions between the US and Iran increased after Qasem Soleimani, a military leader in Iran, was killed during an airstrike. President Trump has stated that the killing was done in an attempt to stop war. About 3,000 additional troops have been sent to the Middle East as a precaution. (BBC)

US Federal Site Hacked
On January 5, a US federal site was hacked by Iranians, who posted pro-Iran messages. The Federal Depository Library Program's website was replaced with a picture of a bloodied President Trump. Homeland Security is now monitoring the situation. (BBC)

US Military Base Targeted
On January 7, two Iraqi bases holding US troops were targeted by Iranian missiles. The attack comes after Iran vowed retaliation for the killing of a top general. No deaths have been reported and President Trump says he feels confident regarding troop safety. (CNN)

Shooting in Aurora
On January 12, there was a shooting at an apartment complex in Aurora, Colorado. Police believe a party was occurring when a gunman entered and shot five people. All victims are expected to survive, and the gunman is still on the loose. (CNN)

Jet Fuel Dumped in LA
On January 15, Delta Airlines dumped jet fuel during its descent to LAX. The fuel was dropped near schools, causing 60 students (elementary to high school) to be taken to the hospital. Delta is now under investigation. (CNN)

Texas School Shooting
On January 15, a Houston area school reported gunshots. Two students were shot, one of whom died later in the hospital. Police have arrested two suspects, but no other information has been released. (CNN)

Two Shootings Over the Weekend
On January 19, two shootings occurred. One occurred in a San Antonia, Texas bar. Police say there was a confrontation between an individual and a group, leading to gunfire that left two dead and five injured. The other shooting occurred in Kansas City at a bar. The gunman began shooting at people waiting in line to get in after the KC Chiefs won a spot in the Super Bowl. The shooting left two people dead and at least fifteen injured. The suspect may be among the deceased. (CNN)

US Announces First Case of Chinese Virus
On January 21, the US announced its first case of the coronavirus that has swept China. So far, China has reported more than 300 cases and 9 deaths. The US citizen recently traveled from China, and has been treated at a hospital in Seattle. On January 24, a second case was confirmed in the US. The woman was traveling back to Chicago from China. The US is considering evacuating other citizens in Wuhan. (BBC)

US Military Base Attacked
On January 24, the Pentagon announced that 34 troops in the January 8 Iran strike have been diagnosed with traumatic brain injuries. Another 17 are still under observation. Originally, President Trump said the attack had left no injuries. (BBC)

Helicopter Crash Kills 9
On January 26, a helicopter crash in California killed all 9 people on board, two of whom were Kobe Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter. Police are still investigating the crash but suspect it was caused by foggy conditions. (CNN)

Trump Releases Two Plans

On January 28, President Trump released his peace plan for the Middle East. His plan proposes that Jerusalem be its own state and the recognition of Israeli West Bank settlements. On January 31, the Trump administration announced an extension of the travel ban. The controversial ban now includes six more countries: Nigeria, Eritrea, Tanzania, Sudan, Kyrgyzstan and Myanmar.
